The Neuroscience of Psychedelics

An online course about psychedelics in the brain, delivered in four modules

Course Description

Decades after psychedelics were legally pushed underground, these compounds are experiencing a public resurgence in the field of mental health. Data showing the effectiveness of psilocybin to treat addiction, ketamine to treat depression, and MDMA to treat PTSD are supporting new legislation across the globe to legalize and decriminalize these therapeutic substances. As more individuals are seeking psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, and mental health professionals are being trained to guide and facilitate these experiences, there is a need to understand how these compounds act in the brain to engender such dramatic transformation.

In this program, we will delve into the science of psychedelics. In easy-to-understand terms, we will break down the mechanisms of action of classical psychedelics like psilocybin, LSD, and DMT, as well as novel compounds like MDMA and Ketamine. We will also practice referencing primary literature to assess the evidence for and against the safe use of these drugs in supporting mental health, including using them in microdosing protocols. At the end of the 4 modules, you will feel confident in discussing the science and the research of psychedelics with clients and peers, and you will be better able to assess their safety and therapeutic fit.

Weekly Modules

Each module is organized around a specific topic, with several short video lessons per week. New modules build on knowledge gained in previous ones.
